Abstract:

Debtor education provides people who have filed bankruptcy the opportunity to acquire money-management skills that will help them avoid a repeat financial failure in the future. This kit is flexible so a trustee can adapt it to his/her own client base, location, and resource availability parameters. The kit includes 3 videos: "The Basics of Chapter 7 Bankruptcy," containing basic information on bankruptcy options and the bankruptcy process; "The Basics of Money Management" (with a self-study guide), which illustrates key concepts including identifying the difference between wants and needs, setting personal priorities and financial goals, developing a plan to reach those goals, and constructing a budget that will serve as the tool to achieve success; and "Teaching Chapter 7 Legal and Administrative," which helps Chapter 7 trustees and bankruptcy professionals identify ways to integrate debtor education into their bankruptcy practices.
